Moral Relativism
It must kind of annoy everyone when people do you job for you. I’m sure even firemen and policemen get pissed at people who take the law into their own hands, or rescue people from a building. I’m never quite sure whether it’s because people are afraid that the stranger is doing their job better than they are, or for some other reason. I know for me it’s another reason; it’s the annoying fear that they’re doing it all wrong.
If you’re a dustbin man, I imagine the fear that someone’s doing your job all wrong is a relatively minor one. If you’re a fireman, or a policeman I imagine it’s a bit more important. I should think doctors have sleepless months about the idea.
As for me; It really pisses me off. I mean, it really really pisses me off.
I’m responsible for the moral education of people the world over, when people start trying to do my job… Well, it becomes a serious problem for me.
The problem is people are trying to make my job sound simple. Like moral decisions come down to “gay people are evil” or “exploiting the poor is wrong”.
It’s really not that simple. The basic rules of morals are simple, but that doesn’t mean the overall result is simple.
This is something any computer geek, mathematician or physicist could tell you. Simple rules can lead to truly complex situations.
Moral situations are complicated, and trying to simplify them can lead to some truly disastrous results.
Just don’t fucking do it! Leave moral education to the professionals.
